Vaccine: Moderna produced in Africa

Vaccine maker Moderna wants to produce mRNA vaccines in Africa. Moderna has announced plans to build a drug production plant in which up to 500 million doses of vaccine could be produced, filled and packaged each year. The American company wants to invest 500 million dollars (432 million euros) in the plant. The location has not yet been selected. In August, German vaccine maker Biontech announced that it would produce vaccines against malaria and tuberculosis in Africa and that it was exploring the development of sustainable production possibilities in Rwanda and Senegal. Clinical studies of mRNA vaccines are expected to start at the end of 2022. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an mRNA vaccine production center is also to be built in South Africa with the help of a consortium. In the country at the southern tip of the continent, corona vaccines must be produced within nine to twelve months. Africa has so far imported the majority of all vaccines.
