More and more soy is produced in Germany. Between 2016 and 2020, the cultivated area more than doubled, from 15,800 to 33,800 hectares, announced the Federal Statistical Office. Soy is used for soy milk, soybean oil, and meat substitutes such as tofu and is also used as animal feed. The main growth countries in Germany are Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. According to statisticians, there is a high demand for soybeans grown in the country, also because genetically modified soybean varieties are not allowed to be grown in Europe. However, the domestic supply is far from sufficient to meet demand: around 3.9 million tonnes of soybeans were imported in 2020. The import of soybeans is however controversial, especially from an environmental point of view. , because forests are cleared for this in Brazil, among others.
