Merck boss Belén Garijo explains why diversity is the basis of innovation, how the pharmaceutical company is preparing for the next crisis and why it is tired of the problem of women.

In fact, 61-year-old Belén Garijo doesn’t want to talk about women and careers and does so afterwards, at least briefly. The Spaniard has been chairman of the Dax Merck group since May. The listed family business generated sales of around 17.5 billion euros in 2020 with around 58,000 employees worldwide. The pressure is high, Garijo says, and the pandemic has not made things easier.
