When does money make you unfree? Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, chairman of the EKD board, on his extreme frugality, his vacation in the cottage and why the rich are better off when there is less poverty.
Interview by Thomas Öchsner and Annette Zoch
Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, president of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, is a fan of Martin Luther. In his office at the church’s regional office in Maxvorstadt in Munich, visitors can see the reformer four times: a cardboard holder on the desk and the Playmobil figure (“the most successful Playmobil figure to date!”), On a cabinet in front of a Luther – Sculpture and painting on the wall. The painted Luther, as the regional bishop of Bavaria points out, looks directly at a replica of the window of the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt, which he saw while praying in the 16th century.
