India’s competition watchdog accuses Google of abusing its dominant position with its Android operating system, according to an investigative report. The US company has used its “enormous financial power” to illegally harm its competitors, according to the Indian Competition Authority (ICC) report. The group has made it difficult for manufacturers to develop and sell devices with alternative Android versions. Mandatory pre-installation of apps is an unfair requirement for device makers and violates India’s competition law. In addition, Google has used the strong position of its app store to protect its dominance. Google’s parent company Alphabet told Reuters it wanted to work with CCI to show how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less.
