Seven months after his new bribery conviction, heir to the Samsung business empire, Lee Jae Yong, was released. He had caused great disturbance, he apologized for it, the 53-year-old said after reports by South Korean broadcasters as he was released from a detention center. He is aware of the “concerns, criticisms and high expectations of him”. Lee was paroled along with more than 800 other convicts. This reduced his prison sentence to two and a half years by almost a year. The reason for the Justice Department’s exemption from punishment is the day Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule on August 15. Many workers and civil organizations had previously spoken out vehemently against Lee’s dismissal.
