DusseldorfGhost games without spectators during the corona pandemic and the failure of transfer income caused a bigger loss for Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund (BVB). “While last year’s sales were only reduced by four months from Corona, we have now had to live with the pandemic for a full fiscal year,” BVB chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke explained. It is an “exciting task to lead the company through a crisis this time for which I was not responsible”. Watzke named ghost games as the main reason for the financial losses. In fiscal year 2020/21, revenue decreased from 36 million to 334.2 million euros. The consolidated loss amounts to nearly 73 (previous year: minus 44) million euros. The result of the transfer activity collapsed to 15.4 (40.2) million euros. In better times, BVB received transfer proceeds of around 200 million euros.
