Unsolicited advertising messages disguised as emails in the letterbox can violate EU law, according to a ruling by the European Court of Justice. Due to the potential for confusion with real emails, people could be unwittingly redirected to relevant websites, the ECJ said. Inbox advertising, which looks almost like a regular inbox email, is only allowed if the user has expressly consented to it. In the particular case, the Städtische Werk Lauf an der Pegnitz had opposed the advertisements of the competing electricity supplier Epimo by e-mail to the users of the online service T-Online: This advertising measure therefore violates the regulations on unfair competition .
