After the devastating floods in July, 20,000 households in the affected areas still have to cope without a telephone connection. It will take months to change that, said Walter Goldenit, chief technology officer of Deutsche Telekom. In the meantime, around 80% are reconnected to the fixed network and alternative solutions are being explored, for example via mobile communications. In areas like Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler or Bad Münstereifel, Telekom wants to extend optical fiber directly due to the destruction. The “Bernd” storm front moved across parts of Germany from July 13-18 and caused flooding in which at least 180 people were killed.
